Councillor Dada Morero
Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg
The City of Johannesburg is elated to announce once again that the highly anticipated African Bank Soweto Marathon which is affectionately known as “ The People ’ s Race ” will take place on Sunday , 03 November 2024 .
The African Bank Soweto Marathon is more than just a race in the event ’ s calendar of the City of Johannesburgit is a celebration of community , perseverance , and the vibrant spirit of Soweto which remains the important heritage in the history of our liberation and democratic breakthrough .
Consequently , it takes place at the backdrop of the story of our 30 years of democracy which transcended all the boundaries of divisions and underdevelopment and progress traversed by the local state .
As we mark 30 years of democracy , the world-famous Soweto will come to a standstill , allowing athletes to take centre stage and rule its historic streets . This marathon offers not only a physical challenge but a unique journey through Soweto ’ s rich cultural heritage .
It is our considered view that whether you are a seasoned runner , a first-time participant , or an enthusiastic supporter cheering on loved ones , you are an essential part of what makes this marathon truly special .
All the runners will traverse iconic landmarks , including the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital , South Africa ’ s third-largest hospital ; Regina Mundi Catholic Church , a beacon in the fight against apartheid ; and Vilakazi Street , the only street in the world that was home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners — former president Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu .
The route also passes the Hector Pieterson Memorial , Orlando Stadium , and the former home of the late Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela , offering runners a powerful connection to Soweto ’ s profound history .
Hosting such a prestigious event solidifies Soweto and Johannesburg as premier sports destination of choice . Our commitment as the City is to use sport as an economic instrument that should help the creative industry in growing the sport ’ s tourism .
We extend our deepest gratitude to the sponsors and organizers , whose tireless efforts each year ensure that all obstacles are cleared , showcasing the beauty of this city and its people to the world .
City officials remain vigilant , and together with the Johannesburg Emergency Management Service , the Joburg Roads Agency , and the Metro Police Department , are fully committed to ensuring a smooth and secure race day .
So , from the heart of Soweto , we welcome you with open arms , warm smiles , and the rhythmic beat of our vibrant culture . May every stride you take be a testament to your strength and inspire all who watch . Together , we run Soweto , together , we conquer the road , and together , we celebrate 30 years of democracy !
The people ’ s race is an integral element of building a City that is resilient , liveable , sustainable as enshrined in our lodestar development paradigm known as Growth Development Strategy 2040 .
