In September 2000,
world leaders committed
to the Millennium
Development Goals.
Until then, few dared to
imagine goals such as eradicating extreme poverty and
hunger, universalizing access to education or reducing
maternal mortality would be possible. Now, with 500
days left before the end of 2015, the MDGs are less a
leap of imagination and more of a challenge that many
leaders feel is within reach.

Recycling urine collected

14 Water: A Defining Issue for Post-2015
Is water a gift of nature, or
a valuable commodity? A
human right, or a luxury
for the privileged few?
Will the agricultural sector
or industrial sector be the
main consumer of this precious resource? Whatever the
answers to these and many more questions, one thing is
clear: that water will be one of the defining issues of the
coming decade.

30 How Do Urine-diverting Dry Toilets Work?
Can prepaid systems become
an instrument to improve access
and quality of water services
to poor people in African cities
and towns? Or does prepayment
deny poor people more access to
water? Do prepaid systems cost too much and impose
more technical, affordability and social pressure on
service providers already struggling to cope with growing
demand? And what do customers think?

16 Better Water Management Needed to
Eradicate Poverty
It demands repetition:
water is a precondition
for all life. It keeps us
alive – literally – while
being a prerequisite for or
integral part of most of our
daily activities. Think hospitals without water, think farms,
energy producers, industries, schools and homes without
our most needed resource. All sectors, without exception, are
dependent on water.
sanitation facilities in general, and in particular of
facilities which are accessible to all – including persons
with
disabilities. This is despite the fact that 15% of the
world’s population lives with some kind of disability.
History is shaped by
innovation and human
ingenuity. From light
bulbs to laptops, each
major breakthrough has changed the way we live – and
in many cases made our world a healthier place.
