14 World Environment Day 2016
World Environment
Day aims to inspire
more people than
ever before to take action to prevent the growing strain on
planet Earth’s natural systems from reaching the breaking
point. The 2016 theme highlights the fight against the
illegal trade in wildlife, which erodes precious biodiversity
and threatens the survival of elephants, rhinos and tigers,
as well as many other species. It also undermines our
economies, communities and security.
19 Releasing the flow: using WASH funding
more efficiently
This is no small task.
More than 650 million
people are currently
without access to
basic water provision,
and almost two and
a half billion people are still denied their human right to
sanitation. Whilst progress has been made on access to safe
drinking water under the Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs), the target to reach 77% of the global population
with sanitation facilities was missed by a margin of almost
700 million people.
Water scarcity,
exacerbated by
climate change, could
cost some regions up
to 6 percent of their
GDP, spur migration, and spark conflict, according to a
new World Bank report released today.*
High and Dry: Climate Change, Water and the Economy,
says the combined effects of growing populations, rising
incomes, and expanding cities will see demand for water
rising exponentially, while supply becomes more erratic
and uncertain.
25 Water drives job creation and economic
growth, says new World Water
Development Report
An estimated three
out of four jobs that
make up the global
workforce are either
heavily or moderately
dependent on water. This means that water shortages
and problems of access to water and sanitation could
limit economic growth and job creation in the coming
decades, according to the 2016 edition of the World
Water Developement Report.
27 Sanitation for all: Scaling up is hard to do
If you invest
even a little bit
of your time
in keeping
on top of
developments
in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector, you will
have seen at least some of the blogs, reports and articles
reminding us all that the world failed to attain the
Millennium Development Goals’ sanitation targets —
by a wide margin.
