Kazuya Ogawa, the Ambassador of Japan to the Rwanda
said, “This support is in line with the EDPRS2 targets
especially achieving universal access to safe drinking
water.”
The Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) is
implementing the project with support from the Japan
International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The project targets three sectors in three districts in the
Eastern Province. These include: Rukira Sector in Ngoma
District, Murama Sector in Kayonza District and Remera
Sector in Gatsibo District.
According to a press release, the grant is the third in
the serial Project of Rural Water Supply in the Eastern
Province.
The first phase which was completed in March 2008 cost
up to $6.1 million. It was used to construct piped water
supply systems and to construct or rehabilitate hand
pumps in Ngoma, Kayonza and Rwamagana districts.
Some $16 million was spent on the second phase which
was completed in July 2013. The money went towards
constructio renovation and expansion of seven facilities
for piped water supply systems at 11 sectors in Ngoma and
Kirehe districts
