WaterNet/WARFSA/GWPSA Symposium in Lilongwe,
Malawi last October. She was
awarded best young water
scientist of 2014 in the oral
presentation category and
outstanding research young
water scientist of 2014 in
the Water & Environment
category.
On 9 March 2015, United
Nations Secretary-General
Ban Ki-moon announced
the appointment of
Stephen O’Brien of
the United Kingdom as
Stephen O’Brien.
Under-Secretary-General
for Humanitarian Affairs, Office for the Coordination
of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and Emergency Relief
Coordinator, the UN Spokesperson’s office announced
today.
Ms Jully Senteu
Jully Senteu graduated in April 2014 at Egerton University
in the joint MSc programme on Limnology and Wetland
Management on the topic: ‘Optimisation of nitrogen
transformation and removal processes in a hybrid tropical
constructed wetland’.
She was part of the first batch to receive a joint degree
from UNESCO-IHE, Egerton University (Kenya) and
BOKU University (Austria). Her research was done in
collaboration with Egerton University, University of Dar
es Salaam and UNESCO-IHE.
AfWA Presidency: The South-African Hamanth
Kasan at the helm of AfWA until the next Congress
Hamanth Kasan is the new
AfWA President. He was
appointed on February 26, 2015,
during the Executive Board
meeting held in Bamako, in
accordance with the statutes
and by-laws of the Association
which define the methods of
Hamanth Kasan
succession in the presidency
of the Association, in the event of unavailability of the
President-in-Office. Hamanth Kasan, previously VicePresident of the Southern Africa region, is the Managing
Director of Rand Water Scientific Services. He took over
his fellow countrywoman, Duduzilé Myeni whose mandate
ran until February 2016, date of the next Congress of the
Association. The decision was ratified on February 27,
during the General Assembly meeting.
Mr. O’Brien succeeds Valerie Amos, also of the United
Kingdom, and the Secretary-General expressed his utmost
gratitude to Ms. Amos for her outstanding services to the
United Nations and the humanitarian community, having
tirelessly advocated for the world’s people in greatest need.
In a statement, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson said
that Mr. O’Brien brings extensive experience in multilateral
diplomacy and advocacy to the post, together with
international leadership and management.
Mr. O’Brien, a qualified and formerly practising solicitor,
holds a degree in Law from Cambridge University.
