Executive Director
It’s been an amazing few months at AfMA,
as we continue to educate and inform
our members on the importance of fleet
management. The highlight for us recently
was the successful running of our annual
Fleet Awards, held again this year at Sydney’s
Doltone House near the harbour.
The night saw over 150 key delegates and
representatives from among our corporate,
supplier and general members come together
to network and celebrate fleet excellence.
There was a wonderful atmosphere among
the room and a fantastic performance by The
Diamonds certainly got the room rocking!
We were delighted to present our Fleet
Manager of the Year Award to Peter Armour
from Life Without Barriers which was
sponsored by Teletrac Navman. In Peter’s
leadership, the Life Without Barriers team has
been able to in-source its entire fleet from an
out-source setup and has significantly reduced
the organisation’s fleet models from 36 to a
streamlined 10 vehicles. Well done Peter!
The Tourism Holdings Australia team, led by
Nicky Bree were winners of our Fleet Safety
Award sponsored by ANCAP. The team were
rightfully recognised for their amazing work
within the telematics area, which has helped
see a huge drop in road accidents and an 84%
reduction in speeding incidents across the fleet.
Our Fleet Environment Award winner was
Churches in Christ in Queensland led by Richard

Schuster, sponsored by Tyre Stewardship
Australia. The team has set out to achieve
ambitious environmental targets, which has
seen overall emissions drop from 224 g/km to
182 g/km across the fleet and electric vehicles
now in regular use across the organisation.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank
everyone who submitted a nomination and
encourage people to start thinking about
nominating their organisation for recognition for
our 2018 Fleet Awards. We would also like to
acknowledge our sponsors Teletrac Navman,
ANCAP Safety, Tyre Stewardship Australia
and Kmart Tyre and Auto Service for their
contributions to the event.
AfMA’s commitment to education continues
with Sydney and Melbourne both running
accredited courses of Diploma of Leadership
and Management. Our Sydney cohort is set for
completion by October 5, with our Melbourne
group set to finish formal classes on February
8, 2018. If you are interested in developing your
leadership skills within the automotive sector, we
encourage you and your employer to consider
this course in the future.
This issue of FleetDrive takes the opportunity to
showcase our deserving award winners as well
as provide an insight into autonomous vehicles
from an insurance and safety perspective with
RCAR and IAG’s Robert McDonald, as well as
an inside look at this year’s Miami study tour
from AfMA President Lee Sauerwald.
