FLEETDRIVE If we focus on getting the basics right it can be a really rewarding business to be involved in, I’d definitely recommend it to others. and any imitative like this is well supported throughout the organisation. In a general sense, how useful are telematics in improving your overall fleet operations? We have definitely improved our operational efficiencies by having the GPS telematics installed across our fleet. We now have the ability to know where our drivers are at all times, which is important not just from a health and safety perspective but also because it allows us to point our technicians and field work force onto their next closest job. What advice would you give for those that are starting out in fleet management or looking to head into that area? I think building a strong and trusted supply network is really important and also having face-to-face communication is very helpful over and above emailing. As a Fleet Manager, you can sort out the majority of business issues and problems by talking to people face-to-face rather than sending communications back and forth. Generally speaking, the fundamentals of Fleet Management are very simple. Our role is to order the correctly specified car for the customer, deliver it on time, and take the old car away. I mean it’s a lot more complicated than that, but sometimes Fleet Managers can over-complicate what the role is all about. If we focus on getting the basics right it can be a really rewarding business to be involved in, I’d definitely recommend it to others. ISSUE 10 2018 / WWW.AFMA.NET.AU 13
