The dance, The Charleston, received it's name from Charleston, South Carolina. The dance is inspired by the sounds of jazz music coupled with African movements, and the actions that occur when someone bears witness to the soulful vibes of jazz. The dance includes quick tap movements that are not difficult to follow.
There are different variations of The Charleston as it continued to evolve in Harlem. When the dance is partnered with swing music, it can be best recognized as the Lindy Charleston or the Swing Charleston.
Dancing the Charleston is not difficult with some Harlem music and the right steps.
Step 1: Step forward with your left foot. Move your right foot forward and tap in front of your left.
Step 2: Step backward with right foot, step backward with left foot and tap behind right foot.
Step 3: Swing your arms side to side and back and forth.
Now you are dancing!!!
