Because of the struggles Holiday had been through, she had found solace in music, often singing along to Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. Her mom moved in the late 1920's to New York City leaving her very few options. She worked in a house of prostitution in Harlem.
Billie Holiday spend most of her childhood in Baltimore, Maryland. Her mother was only a teenager when she was pregnant with her and her father is believed to be Clarence Holiday however, he was not present in her life. Billie Holiday struggled with not having a father figure leading her to start skipping school. They were then forced to go to court over truancy. in 1925, she was sent to a house known for troubled African American girls called House of Good Shepard.
