ADWA "BLACK VICTORY DAY " | Page 4

ABOUT ADWA, it was 1887, regaining the great Roman Empire glory was the drum of the day in Italy. part of that dream was expanding Italy’s territory over seas ( specially in Africa). It is with these constellation of events that Italian troops crossed the highlands of Ethiopia all the way up to Adwa . As many travel accounts of the war authored by both sides loudly speak the Italians were armed to the teeth.

Menelik II was by then the king of Ethiopia. He then began a massive preparation for a counter attack. He mobilized an army of 100,000 men against the Italians. After a both side preparation, the final showdown took place. And against all odds, and unmatched by the superiority of modern ammunitions that the Italians had armed themselves with, the king Minilek of Ethiopia won against the mighty Italians. And ever since then the moment scaled up itself from being just a mere military victory for Ethiopia to becomeing a cause for the independence the entire African continent. It also eradicated the deeply held long adage that the africans cant overcome colonization. Thus, it spurred a wave of anti colonial and slavery struggle elsewhere. Therefore it became a turning point for the struggle of Africans both at home and abroad with a determination to earning their rights.
