Aaron Manfull, 2011 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year, and Ed Sullivan, executive director of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, chat about the state of scholastic journalism at the spring Advisers Luncheon in New York City. Manfull, chair of the JEA Digital Committee, said digital media should be the core of a publications program that everything else revolves around. Photo by Mark Murray Students of honorees share scholarships raduating seniors at the G high schools of the 2011 National High School Journal- ism Teacher of the Year and four Distinguished Advisers have been awarded $3,000 in scholarships by the Dow Jones News Fund. The winners were selected based on writing contests and portfolios submitted this spring. The top scholarship recipient is Kaitlyn Williams of Francis Howell North High School, St. Charles, Mo. Aaron Manfull, 2011 Teacher of the Year, teaches and advises the newsmagazine North Star and FHNtoday.com, where Kaitlyn was the digital editor in chief. She will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the Univer- sity of Missouri. She wrote about the professional growth of Kalen Ponche, editor of the St. Charles Patch. Winners of scholarships awarded in honor of 2011 Distinguished Advisers will receive $500. Krista James of Sparkman High School, Harvest, Ala., who will attend the University of Alabama, profiled Erica Slone, president and publisher of the Madison County Record and Madison Record. Erin Coggins was her adviser. Paige Stewart of Southside High School, Fort Smith, Ark., wrote about a local pastor who tries to reach a younger congrega- tion employing technology when he can. She will attend the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith. Her adviser was Susan Colyer. Wayne Epps Jr. of Prince George (Va.) High School will attend James Madison University where he is a Centennial Scholar. He wrote about the future of ne
