didn’t expect to get accepted,
but I assembled my resume,
a few clips and cover letter,
nonetheless.
A few weeks passed. In
that time, two other newspaper programs I applied to
earlier in the fall had denied
me an internship, while a
third said they were still
black

China Daily newspaper, an
English language publication.
The opportunity presented itself sometime in
January, in an email describing the internship sent to
all students in Penn State’s
College of Communications.

I’ve interned at two publications, done summer work
at a local TV news station
and been a member of my
college newspaper, the Daily
Collegian, for two-and-a-half
years. I’ve written profiles,
hard news stories, features,
taken photos and covered
municipal meetings of every
shape and size. I’ve been a
copy editor, reporter, photographer, columnist and,
yes, I’ve even brought coffee
to one of my superiors. But
this summer, I can add a new
entry to my resume – foreign
international news reporter.
Instead of seeking a job
this summer, I’ll be spending two months in Beijing,

Three days after graduating from Penn
State’ College of Communications in 2009,
Brandon Taylor left for a two-month
internship with the China Daily, an English language government-run newspaper
in Beijing. Three years later, he’s still in
Beijing.
Currently, he is working as an editorial consultant for the Beijing Review, an
English language weekly news magazine
similar to Time.
During the three
years, he has
written columns
under the title
“Beijing Blogger”
for the Times
News, a daily
newspaper serving his hometown
of Tamaqua, Pa.,
where he was a
stringer during
his high school years and an intern, and for
the Bethlehem Press, a weekly newspaper
in Bethlehem, Pa., where he also served as
an intern. In elementary school, Brandon
self-published the BBT News and later
helped revive The Blue and White, the
Tamaqua Area High School newspaper.
This year, Brandon won first place in the
Pa. Newspaper Association’s annual Keystone journalism competition for column
writing and feature beat reporting.
He is the son of George and Mary Ruth
