Summer Workshop Competition
THREE REPORTERS, TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS AND
THREE MULTIMEDIA HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISTS
TO RECEIVE $1,000 SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE
DOW JONES NEWS FUND
I
n 2015, 19 students were nominated for
scholarships from 21 workshops sponsored
by the Dow Jones News Fund. The eight
winners will receive $1,000 college
scholarships.
The winning reporters are Kayla Hamlett from the
Multicultural Journalism Workshop at the University
of Alabama; Nathalie Mairena, Peace Sullivan/
James Ansin High School Workshop in Journalism
and New Media at the University of Miami; and
Alex Schley from the New England High School
Journalism Collaborative Summer Workshop.
The winning photographers are Samanta Carias,
Peace Sullivan/James Ansin High School Workshop
in Journalism and New Media at the University
of Miami and David Guirgis, Urban Journalism
Workshop at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter
Journalism Institute.
The multimedia journalist winners are Andrea
Czobor from the Mayborn Multimedia High School
Journalism Workshop at University of North Texas;
Ximena Tapia, Journalism in July at the University
of Texas at El Paso; and David Perez from the Peace
Sullivan/James Ansin High School Workshop in
Journalism and New Media at the University of
Miami.
“In awarding scholarships, the Dow Jones News
Fund encourages these journalists to continue
cultivating their passion for the craft,” said Linda
Shockley, managing director. “The summer
workshops are designed and implemented by
educators and journalists to launch careers just like
those of these bright stars.”
