Retiring press rights expert Tom Eveslage reviews radical
impact of the Hazelwood decision over the past 25 years

O
ne of the hardest days in the
life of Temple professor Tom
Eveslage’s career was the
day — Jan.13, 1988 — he and
others from the Student Press
Law Center and journalism teach-
ers from around the country waited outside the Supreme Court
to hear the decision regarding
Hazelwood versus Kuhlmeier.
That decision disappointed the
scholastic journalism world as it
dramatically increased admin-
istrators’ control over student
media. Its impact continues to be
felt in many scholastic and college classrooms.
Now 25 years later after a long
career in journalism education,
Tom Eveslage has retired from
Temple University as a national
expert in student press law.
He started his career in high
school as a newspaper staffer
and then headed off to college
at St. Cloud State University, St.
Cloud, Minn., to get certified to
teach high school English and
journalism. His teaching career
began at Mounds View HS in
suburban St. Paul, Minn.
He earned his M.A. in
