website for six years.
Harrison’s dedication to his
students and scholastic journalism
is amplified by his work outside of
regular school hours. He chaperones
his students to the CSPA spring
convention in New York and the
North Carolina Scholastic Media
Institute and serves as a member
of the Carolina Sports Journalism
Camp faculty every summer.
Harrison was a 2016 Special
Recognition Adviser and is a board
member and past president of the
North Carolina Scholastic Media
Advisers Association.
James Miller
has advised
the weekly
TV news
show Manual
AM and
student publication, the Manual
Redeye, at duPont Manual High
School in Louisville, Kentucky, since
2006.
Before teaching, Miller worked
for the local newspaper and TV
station and freelanced for regional
publications. As the Journalism &
Communications department chair,
he brings in professional journalists
to speak to the students and helping
arrange internships.
Miller is also forming the Kentucky
Journalism Teachers Association to
serve as the JEA affiliate. He was
named the 2015 James L. Highland
Media Adviser of the Year by
Western Kentucky University and
received a lifetime achievement
award from the Manual PTSA in
2011.
Matthew
Smith
advises the
Cardinal
Columns
student
newsmagazine and the Fondy Today
broadcast news program at Fond du
Lac (Wisconsin) High School.
In 2014, Smith supported
his students’ efforts to beat
back attempts by the school
administration to establish a prior
review policy after a controversial
story on rape culture. Smith,
together with his students and
school administrators, wrote a new
policy that established student
publications as public forums and
removed prior review. Smith now
plays an active role educating other
advisers and pushing “New Voices”
legislation in Wisconsin.
Smith received the 2017
Northeastern Wisconsin Scholastic
Press Association Skip Zacher
Friend of Scholastic Journalism
Award and the 2016 Kettle Moraine
Press Association’s Nancy Becker
Newspaper Adviser of the Year
Award. He is a board member of
NWSPA and KEMPA and a member
of JEA’s Scholastic Press Rights
Committee.
Kate Plows, a
journalism
teacher,
media
adviser and
art teacher at
Malvern (Pennsylvania) Preparatory
School, was selected as a 2018
Special Recognition Adviser.
Plows took over advising duties for
the Blackfriar Chronicle newspaper
and The Friar’s Lantern website in
2012 after 12 years teaching art.
She adapted quickly to teaching
and advising student media with
help from 1998 National High
School Journalism Teacher of the
Year Kathy Zwiebel through the JEA
Mentorship Program. Her students
have won several awards, including
a 2016 Silver Crown from CSPA.
Plows will receive a plaque and
subscription to WSJ.com.
