LAWRENCE SEAWAY RIDE This ride tours through Canton, and proceeds through Madrid to Waddington then follows the Sea- way Trail (State Highway 37) over- looking Canada en route to Massena, where you ride under the Dwight D. Eisenhower Lock. Plan for a picnic at the Nicandri Nature Center (where your family can spend the day!) and hop in the River at Barnhartt Beach for a re- fresh, all within the Robert Moses State Park. The return route is on the same road, with a different view and opportunity to see oceangoing ships. [52 miles]--Launch points: Canton, Madrid, Waddington, Massena Nestled between the St. Lawrence River and the Adirondack Mountains on New York’s northern border, St. Lawrence County is a hid- den destination for cycling. Hundreds of miles of road cycling routes, from easy, leisurely cycle trips, to challenging circuits that would test even the best cyclists, provide something for everyone. Rolling hills, wide shoulders and minimal traffic - along with unique landscapes make this area an undiscovered destination for riding. Rural charm defines the area, with farm to table restaurants, quaint villages, historic build- ings, a large Amish population and agricul- tural heritage expressed along every route. Charming Bed & Breakfasts are scat- tered throughout the County, offering private rooms and a local touch. Adirondack Century Ride This journey begins in the valley’s farmland at an elevation of about 300 feet, gradually reaching a max- imum elevation of 1,600 feet, climb- ing over 2,800 feet into the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. You will pass by Higley Flow State Park, great for a swim or a picnic. Keep your eyes peeled as bald eagles and other wildlife are often seen from this route. [103 miles]--Launch points: Colton, Cranberry Lake, Star Lake, Potsdam, Canton Discover the Barn Quilt Trails, by Bike Barn Quilts are scattered on build- ings across the County, with spe- cific trails in Hammond and Colton, allowing you to create your own routes based on what interests you. Over 200 quilts exist across the County, each with their own story.
