Everyone loves to move through the water at their own pace, with nothing but nature’s peaceful background noise to listen to. People also have their preferences and opinions on which vessel is the better choice. Closed deck? Open Deck? One blade? Two? When trying to decide which boat suits your individual needs, it is best to rent both a few times and see what you like. The kayak originated from the Eskimo people, but is essen- tially just a type of canoe. Canoes have been around for hun- dreds of years, which therefore leaves room for trial and error when it comes to designing them. If you are just starting out, it is suggested that you rent a canoe or kayak a few times be- fore investing in one or the other. You may decide that you like kayaks more than canoes, canoes more than kayaks, or both just as equally. Whatever your personal preference may be, you will want to learn that through trial and error in a rental. Once you’ve established your liking, you can purchase a kayak or canoe and be well on your way to any destination you choose – law permitting. If you are looking for beautiful scenery while you head down 120 | Summer 2017 | Adventure Outdoors a river, try the Tyger River Canoe Trails in the piedmont section of Sumter National Forest. The Tyger River will lead you through small marshlands and dense, lush forests with tons of green overgrowth. Experience the sounds of chirping birds and view native South Carolina wildlife from the banks while you paddle through the calm water. You will want to know the access points, as not all of them are visible from the river. Be sure to check the park’s website for flooding information and portage points. If you plan to fish while you’re on the river, you will need a fishing license, whether you’re a resident of the state or not. If you take a guided trip, you may be able to find a tour that includes a fish- ing license as well as gear. It is recommended that you travel the trails cautiously and with a friend or group, and if you would like to camp in the forest, campground are accessible from the river. Primitive camping reservations may be made ahead of time. Whether you’re looking for a new activity to try that you have never experienced before, or recommendations on where else to travel for your favorite pastime, these outdoor expedi- tions are sure to please. With activities like paragliding, sailing, hiking, and kayaking, there won’t be a dull moment this sea- son!
