Paragliding is often confused with hang gliding , which is a similar sport , but not quite as simple .

For our first summer land expedition , we ’ re going to go paragliding . Paragliding is often confused with hang gliding , which is a similar sport , but not quite as simple . Paragliding equipment can be packed up into one backpack , and can be easily carried while on a hike or a camping trip , especially if you ’ re in the mountains at higher elevation . Hang gliders are heavier , and their wings are not foldable , which makes transport of the mechanism much more difficult . With paragliding , the wing is fabric , much like a parachute , so the entire thing can be rolled up and folded into a hiker ’ s pack .
Depending on the altitude and the area , a paragliding adventure can last all day . The paraglider may not have an engine ( also a similarity with hang gliders ), but it will cover a lot of distance once in flight . There is an unmatchable freedom to be felt when paragliding . The pilot – you ! – is attached to a harness that is clipped to the fabric wing . Once you take off , usually by foot at a higher altitude , you will be fighting gravity and steering with your body . You can also take a guided paragliding trip , which is highly recommended if this is your first experience , and the guides will often tow you for a launch .
If you ’ re up for the challenge , take a crash course on paragliding and head out to Red Rock Country . Red Rock Country is located in Sedona , Arizona , and is near the Coconino National Forest . Locals call the Oak Creek Canyon the “ centerpiece ” of Red Rock Country , which is a scenic river gorge that is also known as the Grand Canyon ’ s little sister . Oak Creek Canyon brings in thousands of visitors each year , and comes in second only to the Grand Canyon itself . Take a paragliding excursion in Red Rock Country and make time to view the wildlife and amazing rock formations that make this area so majestic .
If you aren ’ t up for the open air beneath your feet , try biking . Biking in the summertime is one of the most popular activities for outdoor enthusiasts because of its intensity levels and wide open range of spaces to visit . You can bike along beaches , through the rugged terrain of high-altitude forests , or on established trails in state and national parks all over the country .
