CAYO COSTA STATE PARK
Located just 12 miles west of Cape Coral , Cayo Costa is part of a chain of barrier islands that protect Pine Island Sound . While it isn ’ t the most accessible park in the country , Cayo Costa is worth every bit of the extra transportation . You will have to get there by boat , but it is a quick ride from the main tourist attraction , Captiva Island . Cayo Costa , translated to “ Key by the Coast ,” is a hidden gem where visitors come to sunbathe and camp out on their boats or in a tent on the shores . There are well over 20 different sites for setting up camp , so stay a while when you get there . There are primitive cabins available to rent for those of us who come without camping equipment .
The nine miles of beautiful beaches are complemented by a lush pine forest . Wildlife thrives within the park , so you may get lucky and spot a manatee or a pod of dolphins . Cruises are available to observe the wildlife , and will transport you to and from the park . Beyond the nature viewing , you can go swimming , snorkeling , fishing , and kayaking while you ’ re there . Cayo Costa has many activities to partake in , so if you ’ re hoping for a campfire circle on the beach , you ’ re in luck .
