Into the Deep
F
or those of us who have been deep sea fishing
before, we know what a rush it can be. Miles away from
shore and in waters that are more than 100 feet deep, you
will have the opportunity to catch saltwater monsters, such
as swordfish, sharks, tuna, and marlin. Deep sea fishing, or
sport-fishing/big-game fishing, is one of the most challenging
ways to satisfy your inner angler. These fish are huge, and will
put up quite a fight. They are known for snapping lines, breaking reels, and causing injuries once on board. The tuna alone
has been recorded putting up a fight for more than 12 hours;
Good luck wrestling that thing!
The good thing about conquering that wicked tuna is that you
can eat it. Remember to bring knives and ice to clean your catch,
and keep it fresh until you make it ashore. If you like to catch
and release, that’s ok, too, and is a requirement for some species.
When looking for top spots to reel in tuna, and even a variety of
marlin and other fish, like sailfish, snapper, and mackerel, check
out tropical locations like Hawaii and Cancun.
Maine is known for its lobster, but you will also find large Blue
Fin tuna here as well, and the deeper the water, the bigger the
fish. Prince Edward Island (Canada) is also known for its Blue
Fins, particularly for being gigantic. The island is home to record-shattering tuna, and shark fishing is available here as well.
Florida is naturally a great spot for fishermen to find the most
variety and it is an easier place to get to than the more exotic
locales (i.e. Hawaii, St. Lucia, etc.). If you’re a Florida fishing
fan, and you haven’t cast a line into the waters of Key West or
the Miami area, you’re missing out. While Florida is a super
popular fishing destination, the state also has a ton of other
things to do, from resorts to theme parks, so you can make a
family trip out of it and you’ll get to have your cake and eat it,
too. If you can make the trip solo, however, we highly recommend touring Florida’s Gulf Coast in an affordable boat rental
or guide program for some of the best fishing in the country.
As for the necessary equipment, you will need a heavy saltwater rod and reel, as well as bait, hooks, proper sinkers and/or
