If you accidentally kill
a protected species,
you need to contact the state’s wildlife department immediately. Do not remove the kill from the
drop-site and do not panic. Remember that you’ll
need to check for an updated list of season openings and be aware of different weapon periods.
If you’re hunting with a crossbow during archery
season, you’re probably going to get in trouble.
If you’re hunting with a dog in a restricted area,
or not wearing the required safety gear (orange
attire, i.e.: vest, hat, jacket) then you may be fined
or even lose the privilege of hunting in that state.
It is good to take a hunter’s education & safety
course just to brush up on the basics that we experienced hunters may accidentally overlook. If
you’re a beginner, it is definitely a requirement.
Do not, under any circumstances whatsoever, hire
a guide service on public (or private) land without
checking for proof of ownership and licensing.
The use and administration of these services is
illegal without proper documentation of all necessary permits and equipment. If there is a guide service or hunting lodge you’re looking into, and they
are hesitant on providing proof of legitimacy, then
don’t even waste your time. Checking for reviews
and recommendations through government/state
websites is a surefire way to guarantee that your
hunt will be both legal and successful.
If you’re having fun in the meantime hunting varmint animals or feral hogs, then keep practicing!
Even though some states don’t limit per season
on varmint animals and predators, you still need to
double-check to make sure you’re licensed properly and have a good amount of tags. If something
goes wrong, the last thing you want to do is battle
the state you’re hunting in over their own game.
No matter where you’re headed or what you’re
planning, a cross-country hunt is a hunter’s dream.
We love to be able to scour new ground, immerse
ourselves into different scenery, and harvest new
animals. The United States has so much amazing
land to cover and it is just begging to be explored.
BE SAFE.
Be smart.
