For a more rugged , outdoor experience , go fishing for Texas river monsters ( a . k . a . alligator gar ) in the Arroyo Colorado , or take a 30-minute drive to the Gulf of Mexico for a bay- or deep-sea fishing excursion where you will find marlin , snapper , amberjack and other species of fish found only in the Gulf of Mexico .

White-tailed deer , nilgai , javelinas , wild hogs , doves and quail are all fair game when you visit the nearby El Canelo Ranch and White Wing Fields for some hunting and Texas hospitality . Just make sure to stop by our Bass Pro Shops in Harlingen to stock up on supplies and gear before you go .
For a change of pace run , walk or bike it over to the Heroes Trail , the Iwo Jima Memorial or any of Harlingen ’ s six trail parks . But if you are still looking for a more leisurely outdoor experience , don ’ t worry . Harlingen has five golf courses where you can enjoy a sunny game of golf anytime of the year .
