An Epidemic of Our Own Creation
Drugs are a blackhole of destruction- Once you get into them, it is almost impossible to get off of them. They are highly addictive! Addiction is something that usually starts when a person does something they think will provide pleasure or assist in avoiding pain. As the person becomes increasingly dependent on the behavior, they develop a tolerance to it. This causes them to need more of the desired behavior in order to achieve the same effects. Addiction can be physiological or psychological: Physiological is the chemical need for a substance, while psychological is when the person believes they need the substance in order to feel good or function regularly. Withdrawals, symptoms that occur due to stopping or lessening in dosage of a drug, often happen when trying to quit. Although some withdrawal symptoms can be intense and painful, they are far better than the long term effects of drug or substance abuse. Some drugs are mroe addictive and more dangerous than others, but that doesn't make them harmless or less bad.
