Adaptations: The Central California Adaptive Sports Center Newsletter Issue 5 - 2017-18 | Page 2
The Central California Adaptive Sports Center (CCASC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering quality
outdoor adventure opportunities to youth and adults with disabilities, including our veterans.
Winter programs include skiing, snowshoeing, and mountaineering at and around China Peak
Mountain Resort. Summer programs include kayaking, paddle-boarding, fly-fishing, rock climbing,
mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, and camping in the Shaver Lake area.
Message from the Director:
Controlled chaos, or so it appears. That’s how we like it . . . and so it was during the weekend of June 29-July 1, 2018, when we
welcomed participants from Valley Center for the Blind, located in Fresno. They were able to experience camping, kayaking,
fly-fishing, mountain biking, and paddle boarding, all in one weekend, and many for the first time. The action was non-stop,
and once the dust settled, all that was left was a bunch of thoroughly thrashed, dirty, happy campers with cameras full of fond
memories. CCASC advocates “challenge by choice” and involvement in activities only to the extent that the participant is
comfortable. However, we also believe that a “body in motion” is a good thing.
As for our 2018 winter season, albeit a very short one, amazingly, thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers, we were able to
jam in 304 ski and snowboard lessons (760 hours of programs) for our participants. We even managed two days of camping in
FEBRUARY at our Eagle Point campground on Shaver Lake!! Who would have imagined?
As for the numbers, here is where we are after 4.5 years in the woods: 261 days of programs (85 days were in camp), 862
participants of which 455 were wounded Vets, and 1,453 lessons including snow skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, horseback
riding, rock climbing, paddle boarding, fly-fishing, mountain biking, and hiking, totaling 4,234 hours.
So, onward we go, into our organization’s fifth year on the planet. Thank you for being a part of this tremendous family.
