Adaptive Sports Campground on Shaver Lake
In 2015 , Southern California Edison ( SCE ) provided CCASC with a tremendous opportunity to have our own campground on Shaver Lake to conduct adaptive sports programs . CCASC immediately pulled together volunteer work crews and set about installing a campground with 10 campsites , a campfire area , picnic tables , and dining area for our participants to enjoy . We constructed tent platforms at wheelchair height so participants can move more easily in and out of their tents .
By 2017 , it became clear that we would soon outgrow our original location . SCE graciously allowed us to begin developing a larger campground at a site with less user density and closer to areas suitable for adaptive sports activities . In 2017 and 2018 , SCE removed dead trees from the area and campsites were laid out through the use of heavy equipment provided by Constar of Clovis , as well as Doug Koerper Construction and Eagle Towing of Shaver Lake .
In the spring of 2019 , with the help of Green Box of Visalia , CCASC was able to install three large storage containers to store our adaptive sports equipment along with a custom unit designed to serve as a kitchen . United Site Services in Fresno joined in by donating and delivering two ADA compliant restrooms . After installing picnic tables and a campfire ring , we relocated to the new site at the South Fork Cove in June 2019 . We have now installed a total of eight tent platforms and created wheelchair friendly paver pathways throughout the campground .
Many thanks to Ryan Stewart SCE Forestry Supervisor , as well as Bill Morse , Rich and Donna Nottingham , Doug Koerper , Paul Gray , Jerry Leggett , and all the volunteers who gave their time and equipment to make this vision come true . So far we have spent 181 days camping , creating many fond memories , with many more to come !
