What is and ACTIVISM
how can I get involved?
The dictionary
definition of activism
is “the policy or action
of using campaigning
to bring about
political or social
change.” If it sounds
like your kind of
thing, read our short
guide:
FOLLOW THE NEWS – To develop views about what is going on in
the world, you need to know what exactly is going on in the first place. This means
delving beyond the headlines and things that typically interest you. Try and get
news from a range of sources to get a wider understanding of stories.
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT – If you
are supportive of LGBTQ+ rights, look into charities, campaigners and activists
who also fight for that cause. The same goes for homelessness, animal rights,
environmental issues and refugees, to name a few.
CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES –
Get in touch with
your MP, know how they can help you get involved and what they can do for you.
University College Union say: “The support of an MP can carry weight in your
institution, help you get media coverage and help you influence ministers where
necessary.”
GO TO SAFE PROTESTS – Taking physical action is a powerful move,
especially when people come together in numbers. Vulnerable groups around the
world can see that crowds of people are on their side. Take as many posters and
eye-catching banners as you can, but also educate yourself on your rights and what
to do if it goes a bit wrong with police/clashing opinions. It happens, even if it’s not
anticipated.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX – There are alternative ways to get your
voice heard: find your artistic flare and share it on social media to evoke attention
(see our later Art for Change piece for inspiration); support those who have the
same view as you and express it through humour/drama/music by attending shows,
talks and plays by them; boycott companies whose ethics you disagree with (non-
vegan beauty companies, those which underpay their workers or unsustainable
food companies, for example).
VOTE - THere is a General Election on the 8th June. Register by the 22nd May to
have your voice heard. Read more about this on Page 22!
