1966
In 1966, 25 acres were purchased
from Glenbard School District
#87. It was originally named North
Park, and in 1971, it was renamed
Ackerman Park in memory of John
Davis Ackerman. The Ackerman
Family was one of the original
families in Glen Ellyn and owned
land in this area. The park now
spans 65 acres and is home to
Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center
(opened in 2010) and serves as an
athletic hub for the community.
1972 2019
In 1972, the Churchill Park
property was purchased with
matching funds from the Bureau
of Outdoor Recreation. The
nature preserve was expanded
in 1998 and 2001. It is the Glen
Ellyn Park District’s biggest
and most well-known natural
and restoration area, boasting
woodlands, prairie,
and wetlands. The Glen Ellyn Park District
turns 100! We have loved
providing parks and recreation
opportunities for the Glen
Ellyn community.
