Activity Guide Spring/Summer 2017 | Page 2

Welcome Our Mission DEAR RESIDENTS, It has been truly a privilege and honor to serve the Glen Ellyn Park District community for two terms; I would personally like to express my appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the capacity of Park Board Commissioner. I thoroughly enjoyed the eight years and am very proud of the accomplishments that the District achieved during that time period including improving recreational services while reducing the park district tax burden. Thank you to the community, my fellow Board members and the staff. I would also like to express my appreciation for all the parent and community volunteers who give their time and talents so freely and often to the Park District. These dedicated volunteers are integral to the success of many of the District’s athletic programs, events, parks/natural areas and activities. The Glen Ellyn Park District is driven to foster diverse, community-based leisure opportunities, through a harmonious blend of quality recreation programs, facilities and open space which will enhance the quality of life into the future. While cold and snowy might not describe this winter, we are still looking forward to the start of spring and summer in Glen Ellyn. The Lake Ellyn Cardboard Regatta, which is held on July 1st, will be here before we know it. Be on the lookout for our new water-related experiences at the lake this season - including the chance to try a pedal boat or to race canoes. It doesn’t truly feel like summer until Sunset Pool opens on Memorial Day weekend. In addition to enjoying the water, there are a number of special events for all ages including TGIF nights, Sunday Sunset BBQ Nights, and a free showing of MOANA for pass holders. Pool passes, at the “early bird” rate, are on sale until April 30 (see page 11 for details). What does the New Year have in store for the Glen Ellyn Park District? After several years of waiting, the District has finally received the funds for a State grants towards Lake Ellyn Park improvements. These improvements, which will be completed by July 4, include the replacement of the playground (built in 1991), an additional fishing pier and other park amenities. In addition, the Park District will be working in partnership with the Glen Ellyn Public Library, Village of Glen Ellyn, and Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn on improvements to Prairie Path Park. The District will also be working in collaboration with the Glen Ellyn Platform Tennis Club, who has contributed $75,000 towards the addition of two platform tennis courts at Maryknoll Park. As the sport and demand continues to grow these courts will serve added players and the expansion costs will be paid for through donations and users fees. Learn more about what is planned for 2017 in our third Annual Report at www.gepark.org/annual-report. Released in January 2017, the report serves as an easy-to-read summary of the financial results and achievements of the District and highlights upcoming projects. Be sure to take the time for fun this season! This issue of the Activity Guide is full of old favorites as well as new ways to enjoy our parks and facilities. Please stay tuned to our website (www.gepark.org) throughout the summer for more details on our events, programs, and projects.
