A small amount of chlorine (or another disinfectant) is added to the water to kill any bacteria or microorganisms that may still be in the water. This process is called disinfection. Water is then placed in a closed tank or reservoir. This gives the disinfection process time to work. The water is stored until it is needed. This is called storage of the water.
