Romanian Cinema
Romanian Cinema through Polish students' eyes
In Romanian films the heroes are ordinary people and films show their everyday life. There is no clear ending – a story is just a part of reality. It is also focuses on psychology and the depths of human nature. Cinema reaches for difficult, controversial matters and the story and characters are left to viewer rating – characters' features are not clear. Black humour usually stems from tragedy, and all assumptions are related to Greek tragedy and the concept of catharsis.
Aesthetically, films of the Romanian New Wave are united by an austere, realist and often minimalist style.
Characteristics of the Romanian cinema
Alin Tasiyan, vice-president of The International Federation of Film Critics, says that international recognition for the Romanian cinema is not a temporary trend. "Believe it’s just the beginning. It’s just a matter of time and money, and soon the Romanian cinema will flourish and will present all its advantages”- he says.
