Meeting Date: Nov. 24, 2014 Board Chair Tom Heidemann ACTION of the School School District Board Anoka-Hennepin Recognitions The School Board recognized the following students and staff: University Avenue Elementary School Vice Chair Marci Anderson • Principal Anissa Cravens of University Avenue Elementary School for Aerospace, Children’s Engineering and Science (UAE) recognized the school’s curriculum integrator, Kate Watson. Earlier this year, Watson was named the National Civil Air Patrol’s 2014 Coordinator of the Year and was also selected to participate in Honeywell’s Educators Space Academy in June. In addition, Cravens said it was Watson’s leadership that lead to the school being presented an award of recognition from the Metropolitan Airports Commission for service and promotion of Anoka County’s Blaine Airport, which UAE partners with for lessons and interesting field trips. Anoka High School Treasurer Bill Harvey Clerk Jeff Simon • Anoka High School Activities Director Gwen Poore and head boys soccer coach Pete Hayes recognized the school’s boys soccer team, which won the 2014-15 Class AA Boys State Soccer Championship last month. Hayes recognized coaches Clint Suel, Todd Springer and Wayne Becklin, and student-athletes Erik Elvig, Luke Olson, Michael Talbot, Tomas Martinez, Alex Orn, Billy Hentges, Connor Schaaf, Blake Neumann, Felipe Genchi, Josua Dobler, Lencho Ahmed, Alec Belknap, Donnie Guimont, Taylor Park, Blake Doyea, Ben Verkuilen, Summer Ness, Connor Hudalla, Brandon Berg, Tyler Trovick, Gavin Matson and Jake Peterson. Parent Involvement Day • School Board Chair Tom Heidemann also made special note of Parent Involvement Day, which was held Nov. 20. “Parent volunteers are the foundation of successful schools in Anoka-Hennepin,” Heidemann said. “Thank you to all who make a difference in the life of a child. We salute you.” Organization Director William Fields Tribute to Dr. Scott Wenzel To start the meeting, School Board Chair Tom Heidemann asked for a moment of silence to honor member Dr. Scott Wenzel, who passed away Nov. 8. “I can say to you truly, everything that Scott Wenzel did was for the benefit of the kids,” Heidemann said. “He’s a colleague that will truly be missed.” Election of School Board treasurer and clerk Director To be decided Due to the passing of Dr. Wenzel, who had been the group’s clerk, the board elected new officers for the roles of clerk and treasurer. Jeff Simon, who had been the board’s treasurer, was unanimously elected to be the board’s clerk. Bill Harvey was then unanimously elected treasurer.
