Meeting Date: Nov. 23, 2015 Board Chair Tom Heidemann ACTION of the School Board Anoka-Hennepin School District Recognitions Vestibule dedication The Anoka-Hennepin School Board dedicated the vestibule area of the Sandburg Education Center in honor of Dr. Scott Wenzel in a special presentation and reception prior to the meeting. Wenzel served 19 years on the Anoka-Hennepin School Board prior to his unexpected death in early 2014. He served as district five director on the School Board. Vice Chair Marci Anderson Treasurer Bill Harvey Anoka High School Anoka High School (AHS) Activities Director Gwen Poore introduced head coach Pete Hayes and the boy’s state champion soccer champion Anoka Tornadoes. Players recognized included Seniors Alec Belknap, Reese Grailer, Blake Neumann, Luke Olson, Zach Richards, Connor Schaaf, Michael Talbot, Tyler Trovik, and Ben Verkuilen. AHS juniors on the team included Chase Anderson, Branden Berg, Blake Doyea, Erik Elvig, Donny Guimont, Miguel Martinez-Urrutia, Gavin Mattson, Jake McNeff, Jeff Neist, and Jake Peterson. Sophmore team members included Sean Neeser, Blake Perry, and Joey Scheldrop. Freshman player Quinlin Putt and team managers Anna Guimont and Victoria Neuman represented the freshman class. Joining Hayes on the coaching staff are assistant coaches Clint Seul, Wayne Becklin and Todd Springer. AHS has now won the state championship in boy’s soccer two consecutive years. Evergreen Park World Cultures Community School Clerk Jeff Simon Sheryl Ray, principal at Evergreen Park World Cultures Community School introduced teacher Maurna Rome, the recipient of a $10,000 literacy grant award from Penguin Random House publishers. Rome explained programs that are in motion at the school to improve literacy skills. Minnesota Department of Education Reward Schools Dr. Mary Wolverton, associate superintendent for elementary schools introduced a series of high achieving Anoka-Hennepin schools that qualified for celebration eligible status through the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). Director William Fields At Hoover Elementary School, interim principal George Vasil and former principal/current Q-Comp Administrator Gwen Sherburne were joined by teachers Rachel Grillo, Deb Brock and Sue Brown in the MDE recognition. Missisippi Elementary principal Ann Sangster was joined by Dawn Applequist, math specialist and Carlyn Wilson, literacy specialist, along with district engagement coach Emily Suedbeck and teachers Sue Swallow and Michelle Peterson. Lincoln Elementary School for the Arts Principal Michelle Zimmerman was recognized along with teachers Hollie Garnhardt, Sue Mitchell, Rebecca Coubal, Rob Gamache, and district engagement coach Anne George. Director Nicole Hayes Communications, delegations and petitions Shawn Chamberlin addressed the board regarding school security. Elementary and secondary education Secondary social studies electives ANOKA-HENNEPIN SCHOOLS A future without limit Kim Pavolvich, director of secondary curriculum, and Berry Arrowsmith, social studies teacher on special assignment, presented a proposal to reshape social studies electives for next year and beyond. A team of 30 teachers reviewed and shaped a proposal to add three
