The award recognizes one educator in the state who demonstrates a sustained history of commitment and contribution to economic education. Judges consid- ered her leadership in economic education; sustained commitment to economic education; continuing prepara- tion in economic education; and contributions to students’ intellectual growth in economics as success factors in presenting the distinction. Principal George also presented Andre Hardy and Grace Worwa who were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. The two are among the select group of 16,000 semifinalists nationally who will vie to become 2018 National Merit Scholars and earn one of the 7,500 scholarships of up to $2,500 for college. To become a semifinalist, students must score in the top 1 percent of entrants from their state on the test. Finalists will be announced in the spring. National Parent Involvement Day Tom Heidemann, School Board chair, read a proclamation supporting Thursday, Nov. 16 as National Parent Involvement Day in recognition of the important support provided by parents to ensure student success. Communications, delegations and petitions The School Board did not receive any communications, delegations or petitions. Community education and governmental relations Canvas election results Heather Peters, communications coordinator and elections coordinator for Anoka-Hennepin, joined Cindy Reichert, Anoka County elections manager, in presenting voting totals from the Nov. 7 election so the School Board could review and approve. Election District 3 votes totaled 2,247 for Bill Harvey and 1,482 for Jessica Geisler with 38 write-in votes. Election District 4 votes totaled 2,751 for Anna Dirkswager and 2,568 for Brian Herda with 58 write-in votes. Election District Six votes totaled 2,859 for Jeff Simon with 195 write-in votes. The School Board offered two referendum questions and both were approved. Ballot question one votes totaled 16,681 yes votes and 8,586 no votes. Ballot question two votes totaled 16,579 yes votes and 8,675 no votes. The School Board canvassed the final data, approving the voting totals for the referendum election and the re-election of School Board members Jeff Simon and Bill Harvey, and election of Anna Dirkswager to a School Board seat. 1
