Meeting Date: Nov. 9, 2015 Board Chair Tom Heidemann Vice Chair Marci Anderson ACTION of the School Board Anoka-Hennepin School District World’s Best Workforce public hearing Dr. Jinger Gustafson, associate superintendent for middle schools, provided the framework for the district’s performance in relation to Minnesota’s World’s Best Workforce legislation. Johnna Rohmer-Hirt, director of research, evaluation and testing provided data and analysis. Strategies included in the World’s Best Workforce legislation include preparing all students for kindergarten, ensuring all students are proficient readers by third grade, eliminating the achievement gap, preparing all students for college and career, and graduating all students from high school. The School Board accepted the report and opened the floor for public comments. Approval of the plan is anticipated at the Nov. 23 School Board meeting in advance of the Dec. 1 deadline. Recognitions Treasurer Bill Harvey Clerk Jeff Simon Director William Fields Minnesota Department of Education Reward Schools Dr. Mary Wolverton, associate superintendent for elementary schools, presented two schools that achieved reward designation status through the Minnesota Department of Education. The 891 schools that qualify for federal Title 1 funds in Minnesota are measured on proficiency, academic growth and achievement gap reduction through a multiple measures rating system. Three schools in Anoka-Hennepin earned the reward status – Eisenhower, Madison and Adams. For Eisenhower Elementary in Coon Rapids, this marked the fourth consecutive year that school has achieved a reward designation. Principal Amy Reed commented on the efforts by staff for continuous improvement and dedication to the success of each student. Reed noted that Eisenhower achieved a 96.13 percent rating on the scale which is one of the top scores in Minnesota. Teachers and staff recognized along with Principal Reed included Jackie O’Connell, Heidi Peterson, Nicole Sobania, Jen Mares, Kris Richardson, Kim Sagan, Sue Denlinger, and Tim Geisenhoff. Hard work and persistence from staff was a key element for Madison Elementary in Blaine to achieve reward status. Principal Dorothy Olsen described a coordinated program of grade level goals and action plans has led to improvements in math and reading performance for students. Staff recognized along with Principal Olsen included Tim Peterson, Traci Intihar, Vicki Carlson, Carol Leafblad, Mary Roth and Liz Harvey. Dr. Wolverton commented that the School Board will be presented with additional award recognized schools at their next meeting. Director Nicole Hayes ANOKA-HENNEPIN SCHOOLS A future without limit National Parent Involvement Day Tom Heidemann, School Board chair, read a statement proclaiming Thursday, Nov. 19 as National Parent Involvement Day. Chair Heidemann noted that Anoka-Hennepin Schools benefitted from 9,399 volunteers with a total of 162,000 hours of service over the past school year. Over 30 years of research demonstrates that involvement by parents and guardians is a key indicator in the success of students in school. Communications, delegations and petitions LeMoyne Corgard, president of Anoka-Hennepin Education, commented on a proposed social media policy under development.
