School Board Chair Tom Heidemann introduced new Superintendent David Law, who began work July 1 following the retirement of Dennis Carlson. Heidemann briefly described
the process of selecting a new superintendent, which began last September with gathering public input on skills, abilities and qualities needed in the person who would lead the
state’s largest school district. The position was advertised nationwide beginning in October.
In January a list of candidates was presented to the board and then narrowed down to six
candidates for interviews. After a first round of interviews in late January, three candidates
were selected to move forward to a full day each of interviews and question and answer
sessions with students, community members, teachers, principals and other staff, and the
board in February. Following the final interview Feb. 20, the board immediately chose Law
and announced the appointment.
Superintendent Law said it was an honor to be in a pool of talented applicants and “great
to come back to my home community” as superintendent. Law attended Anoka-Hennepin
schools from kindergarten through high school graduation. He taught math at Coon Rapids
High School and served as an assistant principal at Sandburg Middle School before going
to the White Bear Lake Area Schools, first as a principal and later as an assistant superintendent.

Tax levy certification timeline presented
Treasurer

Chief Financial Officer Michelle Vargas presented key dates in the Truth in Taxation calendar that ultimately leads to board approval of the levy for taxes payable in 2015 to fund the
2015-16 school year.
The board will review the proposed tax levy Sept. 22 and certify it to the county auditor,
who will then prepare estimated tax statements for property owners. These will be mailed
between Nov. 11 and 24.
Director
Bill Harvey
The board will hold its annual Truth in Taxation hearing Dec. 8, 6 p.m., at Sandburg Education Center prior to a regular meeting. It will then adopt the levy and certify it to the county
auditor by Dec. 26.
Board member William Fields asked about setting the tax rate. Vargas explained that the
process is based on legislative calculations. Once the various taxing bodies report their proposed levies, the auditor calculates the tax rate and sends that information to tax owners.
The school district will communicate that information during the public hearing.
Director
William Fields
The board approved the Truth in Taxation calendar.
