Anoka Halloween donation
Mary Litke and Liz McFarland from Anoka Halloween demonstrated a strong ongoing commitment of support
for Anoka-Hennepin schools and students by presenting a $1,500 donation for use in school media centers. It
is one of many ways Anoka Halloween show support for youth. The committee shares button sales revenue with
schools, and also sponsors an annual scholarship program for students.
National FBI Safe Online Surfing Award
Robert Bone II, FBI Minneapolis acting special agent in charge, presented award certificates to students from
Jackson (JMS), Northdale (NMS), Oak View (OVMS) and Roosevelt (RMS) middle schools who led their schools to
a first place ranking in the National FBI safe online surfing internet challenge for the month of December 2017.
Under the direction of computer explorations teacher Steve Burrill, 267 eighth-grade students compiled the top
score in the nation, outpacing nearly 100,000 other students in 1,642 schools across the nation. Honored stu-
dents include Gabe Adams, NMS, Madison Gruhn, JMS, Grace Amell, OVMS, Lyhnsay Yang, OVMS, Josh Deter-
man, RMS, and Derek Kohen, RMS.
Roosevelt Middle School Scholastic Art Award winners
Greg Blodgett, principal, and Pam Schwandt, art teacher, presented eighth-grade students who achieved high
status in the Scholastic Art Awards. Jamie Petrow was recognized for silver level status and Brianna Fleek, Frank
Long, Brook Nowicki were recognized for gold level awards.
Anoka Middle School for the Arts Scholastic Art Award winners
Tim Sukalski, AMSA assistant principal, presented eighth-grade students Abagail Davis, Connor Minshew, Tin
Pham, and Raina Roe who achieved gold key level status in the Scholastic Art Awards competition.
National Association of School Nurses Academy of School Nursing Fellows Award
The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) has named Cindy Hiltz, Anoka-Hennepin health services co-
ordinator, as an Academy of School Nursing Fellow, a symbol of superior achievement in school nursing. With a
membership of 16,000, only 95 school nurses in the nation have received the NASN Fellow designation, making
the honor the most prestigious award presented by the organization.
Association for Career and Technical Education Outstanding Commitment Award
Jeff McGonigal, associate superintendent for secondary schools, was presented the Outstanding Commitment
Award from the Association for Career and Technical Education.
