La Loi du Marché by Stpéhane Brizé

Drama, 2015

La loi du marché is a film with Vincent Lindon, the main charcater. The film was directed by Stéphane Brizé, a French director whose work is very interesting even though he did not go to any schools of cinema. The whole scene takes place today. It is a dramatic film.

Thierry, played by Vincent Lindon, is an unemployed man who is searching for a job. Because of his difficult situation, he is obligated and for the good health of his family, to sell what he cares most. To finally change his mind and not abandon anything. The entire film is full of changes like that. The story and the life of Thierry are reduced to the minimum, in terms of details and actions. The guideline of the story is really linear and the days are all the same. Day after day, the unemployed man is going increasingly upset by his situation. The slow rhythm of his life makes his fight an everyday struggle.

One thing that is striking in the film is that there is not any music, the soundtrack is just made with natural noises. This idea of silence, quiet, does reinforces the idea of routine and lack of details. But it does not mean a lack of reflexion. There are also many long takes (like the CCTV in the supermarket) which are often shaking, a thing that draws the viewer into the movie, as if we were a witness of the scenes.

During the film, the harsh reality of life punches us in the face, and when the film is over we just escape it and take a fresh breath of air, which is really welcome but which invites us to think about it and maybe react. This film is a must. It presents True life.
