Unfortunately, we did not get to compete in our last weekend of the season because Blend presented some ataxia as I was getting him ready to load for our trip. Despite my denial, the veterinarian, the physical assessment, and blood test confirmed the onset of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM). With the help of Ashley and her husband, along with some of their colleagues, our local vet, and Pathogenes, Inc., we implemented a plan of treatment. Blend responded well to the first line of defense. However, during a second round of defense medication, his neurological state faltered dramatically. One of my dear, wise beyond her years, ACTHA friends had told me Blend would let me know when it was time. A few days later, he let me know he was ready, and I had to let him go. His body, heart, and mind were still so strong but he lacked the coordination to sustain quality of life. As he was laid in his grave, the thunder clapped and the gates of Heaven opened. As he was covered, the rain started to fall and the Angels tears joined mine to welcome him home. Blend, you are missed, but will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.
After twenty-two years together, the monetary cost of owning Blend may have been steep, but worth it, as the rewards he gave were priceless...far more than a million-dollar pricetag!!!
Donation to ACTHA in Honor of Blend From Marian Finco
Jan Poland and her palomino Quarter Horse Blend were such great ambassadors for ACTHA during the years they competed together, placing first in the state of Georgia two years in a row and forth in the nation this year. They were the kind of team all riders admired and respected, while demonstrating the qualities of horsemanship, sportsmanship and friendship. The team that went out of their way, to welcome new riders and offer words of encouragement and support to their fellow competitors. In May, at the season final ACTHA ride Jan and Blend were on the roster. Just before the AOC began Jan called the host and stated, “Blend appears to be experiencing neurological problems and the vet is on the way.” The next day Blend was diagnosed with EPM. Blend fought a very courageous battle with this disease and for a short time even appeared to improve. Unfortunately, in July it was obvious this strong, brave horse could not overcome this devastating disease and he lost his battle.
I, and the entire ACTHA community send our deepest sympathy to Jan and the Poland Family, in the loss of the amazing Blend. To honor of my friend and in memory of Blend I have made a donation to ACTHA, so they may continue in their mission.
