Pumpkins are so NOW! by Chiana Trabal

Currently we just entered the wonderful season of autumn. The time of year it starts to cool down and gets closer to Christmas. But what’ s something that everyone enjoys during the autumn and waits all year for? It’ s not Halloween nor Thanksgiving, it’ s everything pumpkin flavored. There’ s pumpkin spice lattes over at Starbucks, pumpkin flavored smear at Einstein Bros. Bagels, and just pumpkin flavored everything everywhere! The taste of pumpkin may be amazing and may seem like the best thing in the world, but how good is it for you? How does it effect you and your health?
The first pumpkin flavored item is the pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks. If someone were to buy one of the 16 ounce lattes with whipped cream, it would add up to 380 calories. For a drink, that is a lot of calories to intake and is close to 20 % of the average calorie intake a person should have. In this drink, there are also 50 grams of sugar. That’ s one-fourth of a cup full of sugar! But on the other hand, pumpkin spice lattes contain 8 grams of saturated fat. A healthy amount of saturated fat is actually good for you. Another great thing about pumpkin spice lattes is that it contains 14 grams of protein!
The next fall favorite item is pumpkin spice cheesecake. The moment my grandma called me to tell me that she brought me a slice of pumpkin spice cheesecake, I flipped out. From the moment I had heard about, I was in love with it, but I knew that it couldn’ t be very healthy at all for me. The pumpkin spice cheesecake from Ruby Tuesday, according the fooducate. com is 700 hundred calories! That’ s more than the pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks! Even though that’ s a lot of calories, I still don’ t regret having some pumpkin flavored cheesecake. Although it contains an insane amount of calories, it has, again, 14 grams of protein. But unfortunately, it contains 740 milligrams
of sodium and the amount of sodium content per serving should be less than 140 milligrams. Sorry pumpkin spice cheesecake lovers, it’ s not as good as you thought.
The last, but never least, pumpkin flavored item is the classic pumpkin pie. Now pumpkin pie is something many people have throughout fall and especially Thanksgiving. Surprisingly, pumpkin pie is as bad as the other pumpkin items above. It contains about 323 calories for 1 slice. That’ s not bad compared to a pumpkin spice latte and pumpkin spice cheesecake. Even though it still contains 318 milligrams of sodium, it’ s not too terribly bad. It also contains 5 grams of protein which is a pretty decent amount. Although it still contains 25 grams of sugar which isn’ t the best thing in the world for someone.
There are countless pumpkin-flavored desserts and drinks out right now at the start of fall and will continue on for the entire season. I only listed a few of the pros and cons of a few pumpkin treats, but if you like, you can research it more yourself to see what other things people are consuming. Also, here’ s a question for y’ all, would you rather eat your calories or drink them? For me, I would say eat my calories rather than drink them for a few reasons. I hope you all have a wonderful start to the season of fall and enjoy all the pumpkin spice flavored food and drinks, just don’ t overload yourself with pumpkin.
