Billy Woods

The 2015 Relay For Life of Ocala will be Lt. Billy Woods second year chairing the event. Woods stepped in this past year as event chair, never having been to a Relay For Life event before. Immediately he recruited a committee of hard-working, diligent leaders that hit the ground running to make the event a success.

To say Woods brought personality to the event would be an understatement. Every team captain meeting began with a loud “CA-CAW!” and wrapped up with his famous “BOOYAH!” He encouraged and motivated teams and committee members to fundraise so that the American Cancer Society can finish the fight against cancer.

The event raised more than $52,000 and had 45 registered teams.

Woods stated several times throughout the year that he didn’t know why he originally decided to be the event chair, but that there was a reason for everything. Through this year he was touched by co-workers and friends being diagnosed or losing their fight against cancer.

They became his reason to Relay.

Hosting a 12-hour event is not an easy feat. However, he led the event like he had been a part of Relay his entire life. Whether it was speaking at the luminaria ceremony, walking the track asking trivia questions at 2 a.m. or taking having an entire can of shaving cream squirted on his head, he always rose the occasion.

Woods is excited to come back for another year of Relay For Life. He is already gathering his committee and making plans to make 2015 the best Relay For Life event ever.
