As a respected member of the DFW music scene,
Cody appreciations the community of artists with
whom he is able to work and share the stage. When
asked about fellow ADR artist Scott Copland, he did
not hold back on his praise.
“Scott Copland is about as fascinating of an individual as I’ve ever been around.” Cody says. “I used
to book shows with that guy just to sit on stage
next to him, to watch him, to listen him more than
anything. To listen to his songs, how he wrote, how
he played... Listen to his banter between the songs
because that’s often times when it’s the most brilliant…He’s just a brilliant song writer. He’s basically
our songwriter version of Charles Bukowski. He’s
just a… he’s a mess, he knows it. I don’t know that
he relishes in it but he doesn’t give a damn about it
that’s how he writes the way he does, because he is
the way he is.”

“But I think that he’s such an interesting character
that people gravitate towards him, a lot of songwriters gravitate towards him. You never know which
one you’re going to get... Literally one day he’s like
‘We got to get together and work on this song’, and
I call him the next day and he’s like, ‘I finished it.’
That might irritate some people and piss some people off. I hung up the phone and started laughing
cause that’s just… That’s Scott, you know.”
On Cody’s decision to cover Scott Copland’s song
‘Last Call for the Blues’ he explains what the song
has meant to him:
“I heard it a long time ago. That was right after I
got married. That was a weird time for me, I was
in-between the metal band and working on stuff for
my first country record. And so I didn’t know what
I was doing. I was really, I was really just messed up,
I’ve by no means lived a healthy lifestyle but it was
more, more unhealthy back then… Me and a buddy
of mine went out drinking (this was long before
kids, like I said I had just gotten married) ended
up going to see Scott... We were out there and, I’ve
heard him play the song before, but that night it really just hit me.”
That ability for a song to reach beyond a melody or
lyrics and strike a chord with someone’s life; it’s that
insightfulness that make Cody Jinks and Scott Copland artists that the ADR family can be proud of.
