The ACOMS Elaine A. Stuebner Scholars Award Program was championed by ACOMS Vice President
Stephanie J. Drew, DMD, FACS among others. She stated, "the real heroines and heroes of our profession are
the ones who, regardless of where they work, institution or office, continue to find the time to give back to
their families, friends, and to our profession. It has been my personal privilege to develop a way to give back
to our profession by cultivating the Stuebner Scholarship through the support of the ACOMS.
In 1958, almost 100 years after Dr. Jones' practice of dentistry was established, Elaine Alice Stuebner
graduated from the Cook County Hospital oral surgery residency program. On October 1, 1960 she became
an AAOMS member. She was the first woman certified as a diplomate to the American Board of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr Stuebner not only broke the glass ceiling, but blazed the trail for mentorship and
giving back to the profession through lifelong learning and leadership.”
Dr. Drew also remarked, “promotion comes from participation. At this time few women have moved into
leadership roles in or specialty due to hard work for our specialty. It is my hope with the Stuebner
Scholarship the pathway to leadership and mentoring will become a road well-traveled by many of my
colleagues. Congratulations to all of the participants this year. Their words inspire me to continue to mentor
and look for the next way to pay it forward."
Congratulations to Dr. Abramowicz and thank you to all who competed for this year's award.
