on me , of course ,” she said . After that failed attempt , she remembered some research she had done , remembered a person ’ s name , and called back and asked to speak to her . It was the beginning of a journey Linda had not expected to take — the person just happened to be the White House head calligrapher . While she had her on the phone , Linda asked if they ever hired out calligraphy work . The woman gave her home address and asked Linda to send samples of her work . She did , and when subsequently she travelled to Washington , D . C . as a chaperone for a school tour , she met with the woman in person while there . The result ? She was hired to teach her methods and techniques at the International Guild of Calligraphers , eventually leading to similar jobs internationally . “ Stepping out led to a whole new facet of my career ,” she said .
