ESCAL (Embedded Systems and Computer
Architecture Lab)
The Embedded Systems and Computer
Architecture Laboratory (ESCAL) is a research
group at the Department of Computer
Engineering at the University of Peradeniya.
The primary focus of the group is inclined
towards micro-architectural design aspects
of embedded microprocessors and their
security and reliability concerns.
The group is led by Prof. Roshan Ragel and has
continued collaborations with Professor Sri
Parameswaran at the Embedded Systems Lab,
School of Computer Science and Engineering,
the University of New South Wales (UNSW),
Sydney. The group consists of the academic
staff members of the Department of
Computer Engineering, the Postgraduate
(Ph.D., M.Phil., M.Eng., and M.Sc.) students
from both the Department of Computer
Engineering and the Postgraduate Institute
of Science (PGIS), and the Undergraduate
students from the Department of Computer
Engineering and the Department of
Statistics and Computer Science. The group
also collaborates with the academic staff
members, postdoctoral researchers and
postgraduate students from the School of
Computer Science and Engineering, UNSW.
Prof. Roshan Ragel regularly visits UNSW,
Sydney, as a visiting research fellow.
At present, the group works on the following
themes:
• Security and Reliability of Embedded
Systems
• Side-Channel Attacks and
Countermeasures
of the High-Performance Computing(HPC)
aspect of GPUs in various domains such as
biocomputing, computer security, machine
learning, and data mining, and even physics.
Main Computer Lab
The main computer lab consists of high-end
computers, which are equipped with both
Windows and Linux operating systems. This
lab also consists of all the multimedia facilities
so that, lab sessions can be done interactively.
This facility is used for lab classes of many
areas such as basic programming, Artificial
Intelligence, Data Mining and Operating
Systems.
• Application Specific Processor and
Memory Hierarchy Design
• High-Performance Computing
Cambio Wearable Computing Lab
A fully equipped research lab donated by
“Cambio Software Engineering, Sri Lanka”.
The focus of this facility is to conduct
research related to biomedical engineering.
Hardware and Interfacing Lab
This lab is dedicated for digital logic
designing labs, industrial automation related
labs and embedded systems research.
The facility is equipped with equipment
such as Oscilloscopes, Power Supplies,
Programmable Logic Controllers and PLC
Conveyor Belts.
Computer Networking Lab
Computer Networking lab of the Department
of Computer Engineering is fully facilitated
for conducting networking and security
related courses. This facility is equipped
with high-end routers, ASAs, layer 3 switches
and modern optical communication devices.
The Department is also enrolled in
the following university and industry-related
programs.
• Intel University Programme
• ARM University Programme
• Oracle Academy
• AWS Educate (Amazon)
• Parallela University Programme
• Altera University Programme
• Cambio Wearable Computing Lab
• Microsoft University Programme
• Google Academy
With all these resources, the
Department of Computer Engineering
highly focuses on producing Computer
Engineering graduates who can compete
with the newest technologies in the field of
Computer Engineering.
