COMPUTER ENGINEERING
MESSAGE FROM
THE SENIOR
TREASURER
W
e have noticed an exceptional growth in the Information Technology (IT)
sector in the country over the last decade. Sri Lankan IT industry has set
its goals to achieve 5 billion USD by 2022 while generating 200000 jobs and
creating 1000 start-ups in this process. ACES is the student body of the department
supporting this maneuver while working hand-in-hand with the industry.
At a stage where the department is on the path of improving its visibility in
the industry and the society through the promotion of IT and research, the ACES
Newsletter does a wonderful job in helping with this good cause. The ACES Newsletter
compiles all ACES events; ACES Hackathon, ACES Coders and the ACES Career Fair
that are organized by ACES annually. I am sure that the strong fundamental knowl-
edge and the competence of our students, in particular showcasing their projects and
innovations will continue to reach the industries through this newsletter.
Dr. G.S.N. Karunarathna,
Senior Treasurer,
ACES,
Faculty of Engineering,
University of Peradeniya.
The Department of Computer Engineering,
which was the Computer Science Department
earlier, was first established in the year 1985
in the Faculty of Engineering at the University
of Peradeniya as one of the oldest Computer
Departments in the University System in Sri
Lanka. In the year 2000, the Department took
another step forward by initiating a degree
program leading to the B.Sc. Engineering
degree specialized in Computer Engineering.
Since then, the Department of Computer
Engineering has been targeting at producing
fully qualified Computer
Engineering
graduates well-equipped with knowledge,
skills, and attitudes required for the global
industry, highly technical research as well
as for the field of academia. The department
focuses on leveling up the competency levels of
their undergraduates by providing them with
deep insights into computational systems and
related disciplines so that they would be able
to build their brand in the highly competitive
field of Computer Engineering.
electronic engineering and computer science.
In order to produce fully qualified computer
engineers, the department has been building
up its resources and now has state-of-the-art
technologies in Networking, Digital Design,
Embedded Systems and Computer Interfacing
and has a rich history of providing Software,
Networking, System and Hardware Engineers
for the leading companies and research centers
in Sri Lanka and around the globe.
In the current trend of teaching
Computer Engineering, the Department of
Computer Engineering proceeds with a mission
of keeping the academic and research programs
on par with internationally recognized
programs in the discipline incorporating the
rapid changes taking place in the industry,
guiding the students to acquire the required
scientific and technological knowledge and
skills and to develop their soft skills, thus
enhancing their professional recognition,
career prospects, and career mobility, both
nationally and internationally. The department
intends to achieve these by making sure the
graduates:
• Understand the basic principles that
underlie present electronic and computer
technology
• Are capable of creatively applying their
understanding of science and engineering
principles to solve problems
• Are competent in communicating their
ideas clearly and succinctly in all forms
• Are motivated to engage in life long
