Cybersecurity is the top threat facing business and critical infrastructure – including water infrastructure – in the United States , according to reports and testimony from the Director of National Intelligence , the Federal Bureau of Investigation , and the Department of Homeland Security . The effects of a cyberattack on critical water infrastructure could cing harm . A robust and tested cybersecurity program is critical to protect public health and safety , prevent service disruptions , and safeguard customer and employee personal and financial information . Managing cybersecurity remains a complex challenge that requires an interdisciplinary , risk-based approach , involving an organization ’ s business leaders , as well as technical and legal advisors . Despite these challenges , and of particular importance with the increased application of smart water technologies , it is critical that organizations develop a plan and implement measures to improve the cybersecurity of their organizations , and of the water sector as a whole .
Cyberattacks can and do happen , and The Last Drop , the ACE21 All Virtual closing session , highlights insight on cybersecurity in the water sector . This expert panel features viewpoints from academia , respected utility leaders , and cybersecurity practitioners . Moderated by AWWA CEO David LaFrance , the panel provides candid and informative dialogue on cybersecurity threats and steps that water utilities can take to mitigate risks .
