Smart Utilities: What Does It Really Mean
and Why Should You Care
8:30–10:00 a.m.
Room: Mile High Ballroom 1E
Track: Smart Water Utility
Moderator: Marianne MacDonald
Big Data….You know what it is because you are already living
it. Utilities have been collecting and processing huge volumes
of data for decades, most have had sophisticated SCADA and
Process Control Systems for just as long. Does that make your
utility smart? The focus is often on how to collect more, add
sensors, software systems, bandwidth. But when it comes
down to basics, utilities are run by people. A Smart Utility is
one that knows how to use its data, systems and bandwidth
to better enable its staff to improve operations and capital
planning efforts. Two of the biggest challenges of our industry
are not having sufficient financial resources and a workforce
that is retiring creating potential risk for loss of critical system
knowledge. A Smart Utility will take advantage of both mature
and emerging technologies to help navigate these challenges and
thrive. This session will address the critical success factors for
becoming a Smart Utility.
