Utilities have been collecting and processing huge volumes of data for decades, most have had sophisticated SCADA and Process Control Systems for just as long. Does that make your utility smart? The focus is often on how to collect more, add sensors, software systems, bandwidth. But when it comes down to basics, utilities are run by people. A Smart Utility is one that knows how to use its data, systems and bandwidth to better enable its staff to improve operations and capital planning efforts. Two of the biggest challenges of our industry are not having sufficient financial resources and a workforce that is retiring creating potential risk for loss of critical system knowledge. A Smart Utility will take advantage of both mature and emerging technologies to help navigate these challenges and thrive. This session will address the critical success factors for becoming a Smart Utility. 8:30 Opening Remarks, Welcome, Introduction of Panelists and Format Marianne MacDonald, CDM 8:45 Don’t Underestimate the Importance of Data Quality: Strategies for Collecting and Managing Accurate, Appropriate, and Consistent Data John Boisvert, Pennichuck Water 9:00 Data Collection and Visualization: Emerging Ways to Better Understand Your System Using LIDAR, Drones and Mixed Reality Amymarie Corriveau, CDM Smith 9:15 Protecting Your Data Using Cybersecurity and Cybersecurity- Related Regulations Impacting Our Industry Jaclyn Vincent, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission 9:30 Systems/Analytics: The Role of Data and How to Pull it Together Across the Utility David Neitz, CDM Smith The People Factor: Don’t Forget the Importance of the Human Element Engaging & Enabling the Workforce of the Future Hardeep Anand, Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department Join us for an engaging one-on-one with poster presenters.
