THE EVOLVING CHALLENGE
OF DBPS, AND WHAT
TO DO ABOUT IT
1:00–1:45 p.m.
Room: 501
Moderator: Thomas Speth
David Reckhow
University of Massachusetts-Amherst
Professor, A.P. Black award winner
After more than 40 years, disinfection byproducts continue
to challenge water utilities. First, there’s the nagging
awareness that most DBPs are still unknown. Then there
is our uncertainty about which of the known DBPs are
most toxic. Compound this with long-term watershed
changes and increasing demands on water systems and
you quickly find yourself in uncharted territory. In the face of
such uncertainty, what should we be doing to best protect
public health?
