Over 90 % of utilities believe that innovation is critical to their future, yet less than 40 % believe they have seen organizational change due to innovation. Culture is the top-rated inhibitor for innovation. Networks were rated just behind technology. Utility innovation leaders must build new behavioral norms and engage key stakeholders to put innovation thinking into action. They can also achieve early wins by reimaging their supply chain as a network of collaboration partners.

Whether the incident is man-made or Mother Nature had a hand, utilities need tools to determine the unknowns surrounding an unexpected contamination incident. Science-based technical approaches resulting from research are explored in this session, as well as how utilities faced with these incidents have responded to the water quality threats and proactive measures taken to mitigate impacts of future incidents.
