BEYOND THE ALGORITHM:

IS AI DRIVING A GREEN PROMISE?
Industrial companies face a monumental challenge: meeting sustainability targets amidst technological complexity. AI offers unprecedented efficiency, but simply throwing algorithms at the problem isn’ t enough. Success hinges on a structured approach, with project management as its core.
Research from the Project Management Institute reveals a clear link between successful sustainability initiatives and effective AI integration. Organisations with AI embedded across the enterprise report a 31 % success rate in energy efficiency, compared to just 8 % for those merely exploring AI. AI can be a powerful enabler, but requires careful planning, execution, and governance.
How can industrial companies harness AI for genuine sustainability? The answer is simple: by implementing a framework prioritising data readiness, leadership preparedness, and strategic alignment is key.
AI thrives on data – and is only as good as the data it is given. Project managers must champion robust data collection, ensuring accuracy and accessibility. This involves addressing common data issues, such as inconsistent formats and siloed sources.
Integrating AI requires skilled teams. Project managers must build high-performing teams with technical expertise and sustainability knowledge. The PMI report highlights the importance of strategic prioritisation, with 51 % of“ Leaders” making AI-driven sustainability a top priority, exceeding the combined prioritisation levels of“ Followers”( 33 %) and“ Laggards”( 16 %).“ Leaders” are those most advanced in their AI adoption, whilst“ Laggards” are the least.
AI-driven initiatives must also align with organisational goals; AI offers automation, but sustainability demands a holistic approach. Project managers must embed sustainability into the DNA of projects, securing buy-in and reinvesting gains, while also prioritising transparency and accuracy. The reinvestment of gains made by AI can help to drive a‘ virtuous cycle’ based on continuous improvement and compounding progress.
By embracing a structured, project-based approach, industrial companies unlock AI’ s potential for lasting sustainability. Project management is the linchpin, building foundations, equipping teams, and aligning objectives. Only then can we harness AI for a truly sustainable future.
